Foggy Bottom, in Northwest DC, is home the George Washington University, the US State Department, the Watergate complex (yes, that one), the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and many other points of interest. Located just west of the White House on the banks of the Potomac River, Foggy Bottom gets its name from the concentrations of fog and industrial smoke that once marked its location. The glass plants, city gas works, and breweries that characterized this once-working class neighborhood have all been razed over the course of various urban renewal campaigns, but a portion of the original townhomes survive in the historic district. As a GW alum and former resident of its dorms, I can assure you that not every slum clearance effort was successful.
Today, Foggy Bottom is a very desirable neighborhood for many District residents. Its Metro stop, location on the Circulator bus route, proximity to federal agencies and non-profits, and central location in the NW quadrant of the city make it an attractive option for students, faculty, professionals, and others. The neighborhood is the location of the District's first Trader Joe's grocery store, and lines on the day it opened stretched all the way the Lincoln Memorial, or at least it felt like it. In recent years, renewed interest in the neighborhood and capital improvements made by the University have spurred many exciting developments, including a new Whole Foods grocery store, the renovation and reopening of the Watergate Hotel, new dining options from fancy to fast-casual, and new housing options.
